Jamie Dave
A woman of substance and a successful entrepreneur, Vandana Talwar launched her label Evanna Fashion House in 2011. Born out of linking her edgy fashion sense and versatile designs, her brand has fast become popular among woman who are looking for innovative designer clothing. Vandana pays attention to harmonize classic tailoring with a touch of edginess to its silhouette. Beautiful detailing and hues truly reflect the spirit of its thrill- seeking and adventurous founder. Evanna Fashion House, a boutique that defines pure class and is synonymous to avant -garde fashion is generating wide level of curiosity  in Singapore. LUSH spoke to Vandana about her passion, her company and her aspirations.

Lush : What was your objective and inspiration when you first launched your label?
Vandana: Owning a label is a dream of every fashion student. A lot of time goes into research and development. It took me 2 years to gather courage and face the reality post my graduation. In 2011, I started my own label – Evanna Fashion House and thereafter I’ve never looked back. My main objective was to put what I learnt during my graduation into practice. It was time to face the world and give my best. I also had to make sure that there was enough brand awareness among women where I hoped to enhance their features via beautiful details, nice cuts, quality fabrics and flattery silhouettes.
Gathering much grit, I kicked off with my venture, created an online boutique and took part in various exhibitions in Singapore. I’ve done 10 fashion shows in Singapore and I recently showcased my Spring / Summer collection at the International Fashion Week in Miami, Florida, USA.

Lush: Just out of curiosity, why didn’t you label your brand after your name?
Vandana: To me, one uses their name when people are aware of who you are and what you do. Otherwise, it doesn’t really give you any advantage but when your brand name is  'Agragrami', it’s one of a kind. Something different, appealing and definitely gets people curious. The word “Agragrami” literally means innovative. just how I like my creations to be, something exceptionally interesting where the wearer feels extremely special.

Lush: You’re exceptionally creative, what 5 things according to you would be a trend in 2017?
Vandana: I personally don’t abide by trends. A trend just serves as a guideline and must not be followed blindly rather one must flaunt their personal style in order to be unique. A strong self-identification and personality takes you a long way. As they say, confidence is the key – you need not be a fashionista but being comfortable in your own skin will automatically bring out the best in you.

Lush: How does your creative thought process roll?
Vandana:  I am open- minded in what I do. I love experimenting with looks which in turn makes me very adventurous and bold. There is a lot of trial and error and I tend to explore unique variations and combinations before giving it for production. I really enjoy the entire process, its fun and there is a sense of job satisfaction and achievement within. I also make sure that customer feedback is taken positively and that makes me work much harder.

Lush: What is the process like between design and production?
Vandana: I am highly inspired by art, paintings, books, music and literally everything. Inspiration is everywhere and I absorb everything I can. I think through my inspiration board and ideas and form a theme. Once this is formed, I go into the details of fabric selection, illustrations, drafting, sampling and last is the execution i.e. production. I am a risk taker and I don’t follow norms but instead tend to think out of the box.

Lush: Your label was born for the woman of today who are confident, well – traveled and know what they want in life. What makes a woman smart and modern according to you?
Vandana: This smart and modern woman is ready for a change; she welcomes new challenges and is willing to step out of her comfort zone. She doesn’t follow trends blindly as she knows exactly what she wants and how. She is financially and emotionally independent and is ready to explore new things.

Lush: What would you suggest to the budding designers of today whether to follow trends or follow their own principles?
Vandana: It’s tricky to be honest because it totally depends on which direction the designer is meaning to take the brand. Quick money is rightly earned via following latest trends but that puts you in a spot as you’ll be competing with the fast fashion brands as well. On the other hand, if you follow your own ideals – it’s hard initially as you have to create a niche for yourself.

Lush: Anything you’d like to add about your label?
Vandana: Evanna Fashion House is a women’s clothing boutique that caters to the woman of today. It defines class, exclusivity and quality. It isn’t a fast fashion brand, we do not mass produce but instead we look into every element of the customer needs and wants. We also have personal styling services which allows our clients to find what suits them the best, be it the fit, style or color. Customer service is of utmost importance to us so we make sure the finest quality products and services are executed. We also offer exclusive pieces under Evanna Fashion House Exclusives and make sure no piece is duplicated. The pieces are timeless and represent innovation, class and elegance. Keeping up with the current trends, we assure show stopping outfits!

WHEN it comes to fashion, anything goes. In our globalised world, no one would blink an eye at a creative mix and match... well, unless your sparkling jewel causes them to.As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Singapore JewelFest, the Indian Women’s Association (IWA) presented Designers Adorn Divas on Oct 18, a runway show that showcased contemporary jewellery matched with the latest trends in Indian couture from Singaporean and Indian fashion designers. The show brought together designers who have moved base from India with home-grown labels to inspire, as part of the IWA’s goal to integrate local women entrepreneurs with the expatriate Indian community.IWA vice-president Sharmila Arora, who curated the show with fellow IWA member Varuna Gupta, told tabla!: “The choice of jewellery to match the designers’ outfits is mainly to create a contemporary look which is not necessarily traditional Indian.“The outfits, though designed by Indian designers of Singapore, are catering to ladies who are getting ready for the oncoming festivities. They are for those who are happy to make a fashion statement, not necessarily within the ‘˜norms’ of traditional Indian attire.‘The photographs on these pages show contemporary jewel pieces from Lee Hwa Jewellery, Goldheart Jewelry, TianPo Jewellery as well as Singapore-based Indian jewellers The Jewel Box and Vihari matched with both traditional and modern Indian fashion. The precious baubles were paired with the couture designs of Sonali Jain of Divine Raga, Neita Sehgal of Emage Storr, Dina Thacker of Ishka, Kuljinder Kaur of Jinder’s and Vandana Talwar of Agragrami Fashion House. This year’s festival is held in two editions, the second edition which started on Oct 17 will feature European labels, such as Zancan Italian Jewellery from Italy and Lode Martens from Belgium, which will be showcasing their collections.Ishka’s luxurious sari, designed by Dina Thacker, is matched with the extravagant diamond creations by Vihari Jewels (right). Adding oomph to the look is a necklace made of white and yellow diamonds, set in 18k white, yellow and rose gold. It weighs a surprising 282g. The necklace is complemented by a pair of white and yellow diamond earrings set in 18k white and yellow gold and a bracelet, also adorned with white and yellow diamonds. There is no better way to mark the year of the dragon than with jewels. The Jewel Box, a local private jeweller, has designed a Dragon Necklace (right) made of South Sea pearls and diamonds set on 14K gold. The designers at The Jewel Box wanted to recreate the magic and flexibility of the mythical creature so that the individual pieces are able to rest comfortably on the wearer. The hand-crafted necklace is matched beautifully with this teal two-piece creation from Agragrami Fashion House helmed by locally trained designer Vandana Talwar known for her avant garde bent.Brides, you might want to consider this ensemble (left), for your wedding trousseau. This ornate stone-and sequin-studded design by Kuljinder Kaur of Jinder’s is amped up by Goldheart Jewelry’s Amaranth Majesty Necklace, one of its showstoppers at this year’s JewelFest. The necklace made of pear-shaped peach-pink Morganites, also known as pink emeralds, and clustered with 1,173 diamonds is set in white gold. The Morganite lays claim to complementing any skin tone. This ensemble is matched with a pair Goldheart’s Colourella earrings made of diamond and coloured stones and given an extra sparkle with the jeweller’s Regalia Bracelet. It is Indian panache with a dash of Italian style. This lengha set (right) by Neita Sehgal of Emage Storr gets an Italian twist with TianPo’s Jewellery’s Marco Bicego collection. The five-strand Marrakech diamond necklace set in 18K gold sets off the colour and details of the suit matched by the five-strand, hand-engraved 18k gold bracelet with mixed semi-precious stones.Adding a pop of drama is TianPo’s diamond and gold RG Gems ring.Divinity and joy come together in this ensemble (right) as Lee Hwa Jewellery’s Joyful Devotion diamonds and blue sapphires necklace set in white gold, with the matching pair of earrings, drapes Divine Raga’s sari piece, designed by Sonali Jain. Definitely one for the dinner party circuit this festive season.

Dress up According to your Body

Dress up According to your Body

Know Thy Body:
Know your measurements before you shop. Not only will it cut down the time you spend trying on clothes, it will help you choose outfits that fit your body perfectly. Among the most important body parts to measure are your bust, chest, hips and waist. Source:iVillage.com

Don't Go Too Tight Or Too Loose:
Dressing for your size doesn't just mean nixing clothes that are too tight from your wardrobe. It also means you shouldn't wear clothes that are too baggy. Both will make you look frumpy.

Make Sure You Can Walk In Them:
There are some occasions we'd sacrifice comfort for fashion. After all, four inch heels guarantee that legs-for-miles look. But if it looks better than it actually feels on your foot, you probably won't wear it. Don't waste your money (or endure the pain). Source:The Fashion Spot

Peek-A-Boo Isn't Cute:
Button down blouses are intended to do one thing and one thing alone — stay buttoned down. It looks sloppy if we can see what lies beneath your shirt.

Be A Lone Wolf:
Shop solo. You'll be able to concentrate more on hunting down exactly what you're looking for. You'll save a lot of time while you're at it too. Source:In Style

Remove Lint:
A lint roller is a must-have (cat lovers, you know what we're talking about). Give your outfit a few quick swipes before heading out the door (don't forget your back and behind your legs) to catch any unwanted hair and dust on your clothing.

The Power Of Peplum:
Worried about your waist or hips? Try peplum for an instant slimming effect. It flatters every figure and does wonders at hiding unsightly bulge.

Try On Three Sizes, Not One:
Shoe sizes vary among designers and brands. Start by trying on your usual shoe size, then try on one pair that's a half-size smaller and a second pair that's a half-size larger. When in doubt, buy the shoes that are a half-size larger. Source:The Fashion Spot

Know Your Colours:
Know which colours will flatter you the most by figuring out if the undertones in your skin are either warm or cold. The experts at The Fashion Spot say women with cool undertones look best in white, black, gray, silver, and shades of blue. Women with warm undertones will be dazzling in shades of yellow, gold, brown, green and red. Source: The Fashion Spot

Organize Your Closet:
Organize your closet. This way you'll be able to see what you own (and actually wear it). Separate your clothes by garment. Figure out what what can be folded neatly and what needs to be hanged. Make sure you get the right hangers for shirts, skirts and pants. Use storage shelves to store your purses and intimates and buy a shoe rack. For more detailed instructions on how to tackle this task, check out what our friends at Lucky Magazine have to say. Source: Lucky Magazine

Double-Sided Tape Is A Dream Come True:
Keep plunging necklines in place and prevent any fashion mishaps with this godsend. We double-swear by double-sided tape.

Invest In A Quality Iron:
A quality iron is an absolute must to ensure you don't damage your clothes. Get one with a range of settings that can conquer even the toughest wrinkles, but gentle enough to iron over delicate fabrics. Because there are so many irons out there, the folks at Real Simple have made it easier for you to decide on one that will meet your needs. Check out their list of the top 40 irons they tried.

Get Chic With An Ultra Cute Umbrella:
Rain or shine, we are always trendy. Get yourself a colourful, knock-out umbrella that makes you stick out.

Work Out Stylishly:
Come on, let's be serious, the gym can be an intimidating place with so many buff, sweaty bods. We'd be lying if we didn't say we never wore mascara before lacing up. But hitting the gym shouldn't make you fret. It should make you feel good. Getting some trendy workout clothes that fit your body will make you feel more confident and encourage you to break a sweat.

Organize Your Jewelry:
Store all your jewelry in a jewelry box. You're less likely to lose them when they have a home. Not only will they be easier to find in one handy location, you'll remember what you already own so you don't buy pieces you don't need. Your jewelry will also last much longer when it's protected.

Alter Your Clothes:
It's important when you're investing in articles of clothing that become staples, like blazers and pants, that you have them tailored. It will ensure your money is well-spent, will make the piece that much more special and will make you feel great every time you wear it. After all, it only fits you.

Help Boots Stand Tall With Wine:
Wine bottles have another use — place them inside your boots to make them stand upright. Source: Real Simple

Know Your Neckline:
Making note of what works for you and what doesn't is key and neckline plays a huge roll in this. The neckline is the part that shows off your pretty face, so be sure to get it right.

Know Your Arch:
Shoe shopping? Make sure you know your arch type. In an interview with the folks at The Fashion Spot, Erica Lynn Stanley, design director of...me Too shoes, said the best way to determine your arch is to step on a piece of paper after wetting the bottom of your foot. You can determine whether you have a normal, flat or high arch by examining your wet footprint. If the middle part of your footprint doesn't show up, you have a high arch, but if you can see most of your footprint then you have a fairly flat arch. Your arch is normal if you see half of your wet footprint. Source:The Fashion Spot

Donate Clothes You'll Never Wear:
Stop hoarding. If you haven't worn it recently, then you probably never will. To help decide if you should toss it or not, the experts at Apartment Therapy suggest you answer the following questions: Do you like cut, fabric and colour? Are you comfortable wearing it? Does it fit you now (no, not if you lose 3 inches off your waist in the next month)? Can any damages like stains or holes be fixed? Do you have more than one place to wear it? Can it be combined with other articles of clothing in your closet? When was the last time you wore it (if it's been over a year, nix it)? Source: Apartment Therapy

Learn To Pack Lightly:
Packing lightly is an art. Unless you're walking a runway in Milan, you won't need more than just a few key ensembles. The folks over atApartment Therapy stick to this rule-of-thumb: If you're going away for one week, pack three bottoms and 3 shirts per bottom. For two weeks pack five bottoms. For every dress you pack, you can lose a shirt and a bottom.

Nix The Change Purse: Change purses can be useful, but if yours rarely sees daylight, either because you don't put change in it, or worse, never take change out of it (this is just dead weight), then it's time to say goodbye.

Body Shapers:
Body shapers are ideal for hiding excess bulge (who likes the sight of love handles or muffin tops?) and allows clothes to glide on smoothly.

Limit Accessories:
We love accessories, but we have to draw the line somewhere. If you're throwing yourself an arm party, then it might be better to steer clear of too many rings. If you're wearing large earrings that scream for attention, then you might want to forgo an equally radiant necklace — they will only work against each other.

Purse Essentials:
A purse isn't just a fashion statement. It's main purpose is functional. You carry it around wherever you go so it needs to contain some essentials: your wallet, a pen, pain killers, hand sanitiser, tissues, make-up essentials (we personally won't leave the house without lip stick and/or lip balm), hand cream, gum or breath mints, tampons or maxi pads (no one wants to be caught off guard during that time of the month), and for those of you who spend lengthy bouts talking, texting or gaming, bring your phone charger along.

When In Doubt, Overdress:
There's nothing worse than showing up an event underdressed. Maybe the invite didn't specify or involved the word casual — but everyone else dressed up not so casually. If you don't know what the dress code is, overdress. There's no harm in looking too pulled together, but you'll feel uncomfortable if you think you look out of place.

Wear Nice Underwear:
Wearing nice underwear every day will make you feel special. Sure, not everyone gets to be so lucky and see how nice your underwear is, but you'll know. Also, be sure to get your bras fitted — often. It will make your clothes hang better and be infinitely more comfortable.

Sharpen Your Sewing Skills:
Have a mini sewing kit at home or in your purse. This way you can salvage your favourite blouse or pair of pants by patching up minor tears with some simple needle and thread action.

Get Some Stay-Up Thigh-Highs:
Sometimes pantyhose creates an unsightly bulge around our mid-section (ladies, you know what we're talking about). To eliminate this altogether, why not use substitute pantyhose with stay-up thigh-highs? They'll do exactly what pantyhose does, minus the bulge.

Use Nail Polish To Stop A Tear In Its Tracks:
Pantyhose is notorious for ripping. We've been victim to this fashion mishap one too many times. Until someone invents pantyhose that won't tear at the slightest tug, we've got a temporary fix. Just dab clear nail polish on both ends of the rip and it should keep it from getting larger.

Work Clothes Need Not Be Frumpy:
Just because you have to dress office casual doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. Find well-tailored pieces and incorporate accessories and colour to create a more exciting look.

Take Care Of Your Undergarments: To extend the longevity of your bra and ensure a perfect fit each time, you'll need to take care of them properly. The experts atLa Vie En Rose recommend you wash your bras by hand to ensure they lasts as long as possible. If you opt for machine washing, unhook your bra to prevent it from twisting and turning. You may also want to use a wash bag which will separate and protect your bras from the rest of your clothes. Make sure you select a delicate or permanent press cycle, and whatever you do, do not use detergent. It's way too harsh and will damage the cup, lace and elasticity of your bra. You might want to try usingForever New Fabric Wash. Air dry your bras by hanging them. Source: La Vie En Rose

If You Feel Uncomfortable, You Probably Look Uncomfortable: Your confidence is affected by what you're wearing, as sad of a thought as that might be. So if you're feeling self-conscious about your outfit, you're likely to be tugging at it or double-checking that everything is in place all day and night.

Invest In A Good Wallet: It may spend most of its time in your purse but your wallet is just as important as your purse. Need we remind you of #ThatAwkwardMoment when you've pulled out a lifeless, ragged wallet from your designer purse? There's nothing more embarrassing. Invest in a quality wallet, one that reflects your signature style.

Don't Overdo Belts: The belt is meant to give you a waist or hold your pants up. There are times however, the belt should be left at home. If an outfit is already fitted, there is no need for a belt. If you are wearing pants but feeling like belting the shirt, it looks a little odd. Use belts sparingly rather than often.

Pretty PJs: You've spent all day looking lovely, so why not go to bed looking pretty too? Falling asleep is all about comfort so rest assured, pretty pyjamas don't mean uncomfortable ones. Lose the oversized shirt or baggy sweats for lightweight pyjama bottoms and top. Who knows? You might sleep easier.

Less Really Is More: Indecent exposure isn't classy. Celebrity stylist Jen Rade, who has dressed many beauties including Angelina Jolie, told In Style that only one body part should be exposed at a time. If you're baring your décolletage, don't also show off your legs. Remember ladies, a little bit of mystery is alluring. Some things are better left to the imagination. Source: In Style

Add Shine To Your Step: If you're out of shoe polish, the staff at Woman's Day suggest rubbing a bit of lotion on your shoes. It works well on the tips of pointed shoes and increases the longevity of leather by keeping it supple. Source: Woman's Day

Watches Are Timeless: Sometimes the thought of throwing on an arm party first thing in the morning can be intimidating, which is why watches are awesome. They are classic and can represent your personality. And if you invest in a good one, it could last you a lifetime.

Make Lists: If you love shopping, then make lists your best friend. They will make your life easier. Not only will they keep your focus on the items you actually need, they'll cut down the amount of time you spend shopping and prevent you from making impulse purchases (we hope).

Ready-To-Wear Ensembles: Have ready-to-wear ensembles hanging in your closet (yes, even the shoes and if you're really keen, the accessories too). They will come in handy when you either have absolutely nothing to wear or when you're in a rush to pull an outfit together. It's better to have a few for different occasions -- one corporate, one casual and one glamourous look. You can thank us for this tip later.

How To Wear Denim On Denim: The style experts at Refinery 29 say that doubling up on denim can work if you wear dark slim-fitting pants and a lighter slim-fitting top. You might want to break up the jean look by adding a cute belt. Source:Refinery 29

Stock Up On Basics: Known your essentials and stock up. These include white and black blouses, a little black dress, high heels, red lipstick, diamond studs, blue jeans and anything else that has a central role in your style. Remember, these looks are timeless so investing in certain items that are more expensive but higher in quality may be wiser because they will last longer.

Try Everything On: Make sure you always try clothes on when you shop. Yes, we get lazy doing this over and over again but it's a necessary evil. Sizes change depending on fabric, designer and store. You might also want to bring along your own accessories and shoes (or use some at the store) to get a better sense of how the complete outfit will look. You'll also save yourself the hassle of returning or exchanging an outfit that doesn't look right if you try it on before buying it.

Don't Pretend It Fits: We've all been there, standing in the dressing room and convincing ourselves that the button will magically stay closed when we get home (and then, of course, it doesn't). These are the times where we have to accept that our bodies have changed in one way or another, and buy clothes that fit. Because you know what happens to the clothes that don't fit (cue garbage bags being dropped off at Goodwill here).

Go Green: Green is this year's hottest hue according to Pantone so go wild. If you're not a fan of it (or colour in general), try incorporating it into your outfits in small doses with a green purse or some green accessories like a scarf or bracelet.

Go Nude When You Wear White: White is a tricky colour to wear, so if you're wearing white pants, don't wear black or white underwear because it will still be visible through your pants. Instead, buy nude underwear. It's more discreet. Source:Oprah Style

Depill A Sweater With Sandpaper: Gently rub sandpaper on your beloved sweaters to get rid of any unsightly pills. Our friends over at Apartment Therapy have tried it and they swear it works. Source: Apartment Therapy

Take Care Of Leather: Real leather is expensive, so it makes sense to take care of it. But often this is one thing we overlook. Soon our favourite boots are destroyed and have salt stains from the dreaded winter. It only takes a few extra minutes to get our prized leather goods ready for bad weather so it's something to start doing...now.

Dress Your Age: Janice Dickinson doesn't look 57, but she is. We're not going to lie, she looks great, but let's face it, it's a tad tacky when 50-somethings try sporting an outfit you'd normally find on 20-somethings — and vice versa. However, tinsel town allows celebrities more leeway than the real world does for us ordinary folk. As a rule of thumb, stick to age appropriate attire.

Real Fur Vs Faux Fur

Real Fur Vs Faux Fur

Processing of fur
  • The manufacturing of fur clothing involves obtaining animal pelts where the hair is left on. Fur processing involves an array of chemicals from soaking and degreasing agents, to enzymes, oils and greases, bleaches, dyes, reinforcing agents, toners, tanning and finishing chemicals. Workers exposed to dust created during fur processing have been shown to have reduced pulmonary function in direct proportion to their length of exposure.
  • In contrast, leather made from any animal hide involves removing the fur from the skin and using only the tanned skin. The use of wool  involves shearing the animal's hair from the living animal, so that the wool can be re grown. Fake fur  or "faux fur" designates any synthetic material,  produced from oil, that attempts to mimic the appearance and feel of real fur.
  • The chemical treatment of fur to increase its felting quality is known as carroting, as the process tends to turn the tips of the fur a yellowish-red "carrot like" color.
  • Why Real Fur?
  • Real fur cannot be matched for its beauty, softness and glamour. The attraction of real fur is also in its touch, its feel, and in its three-dimensional quality. Designers speak of the way real fur plays with light and movement.
  • Furthermore, real fur is a natural sustainable product, delivering rare benefits in sustaining fragile habitats and communities. This contrasts with most ‘fake’ fur which is manufactured from non-renewable petroleum based products.
  • Real fur is a durable material – quite the opposite of disposable fashion. Provided it is well looked after, real fur will continue to look good for many years. Real fur can be re-styled into different pieces as fashion changes.

  • Warmth: Fur is still Nature's most beautiful answer to Winter - the ultimate in luxurious cold-weather protection!
  • Fashion: The classic elegance of fur is always in style, as Karl Lagerfeld, Fendi, Yves St.-Laurent and other international designers have shown yet again this year, fur is everywhere. Just look through any top fashion magazine!
  • Practical: A garment for all occasions. Worn with blue jeans or with an evening gown, you will look and feel terrific in fur! Comfort: Soft, sensual, cozy, and lightweight - there is simply nothing to equal the pleasure and natural luxury of wearing fur!
  • Long Lasting: Fur is a naturally durable fiber that should last for many years. You needn't be over-protective - wear your fur and enjoy it!
  • Environmental Friendly: A fine natural product, fur is also biodegradable and a renewable resource - unlike polyester, fake furs and other petroleum-based synthetics.
  • Responsible Conservation: Furs used in the trade are abundant; strict government controls ensure that no endangered species are ever used. Sustainable use of wildlife is endorsed by all major conservation organizations including the International Conservation Union and the World Wildlife Fund.
  • Supporting Livelihoods & Cultures: When you buy fur, you support thousands of aboriginal and other Canadians living on the land - people who have a direct interest in protecting vital wildlife habitat!
A Canadian Heritage: Canada was built on the fur trade - Canadian furs are still renowned today as the world's finest!

  • Is fur really green?
  • Consumers wading into the debate will find a spate of arguments on the merits and harms of fur. A counter argument meets every argument in the fur debate.
  • Many activists including PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) cite a 1979 University of Michigan study that found the process of rearing ranch-raised animals consumes 20 times the energy as compared with a synthetic fur coat. Meanwhile, the FCC says that up to four liters of petroleum is used to make synthetic coats.
  • Similarly, the anti-fur lobby argues that furs are not eco-friendly because chemicals including chromium and formaldehyde are used to treat them. However, the FCC says that while small amounts of formaldehyde are used in the tanning process, fur pelts are primarily treated with natural products including table salt, water and lanolin.
  • Finding middle ground in the debate can be difficult. But at the very least, the campaign is spurring relevant and important discussions, says John Fryxell, a zoology professor at the University of Guelph.
  • Fryxell says that he doesn't subscribe to the idea that trapping is essential to maintain the health of wildlife populations but he notes that human use of animals can be sustainable. He also notes people who stand to benefit from wildlife tend to be active in protecting their habitats.
  • "On the other hand, there have been some very heated debates about fur trapping and those arguments also need to be taken into consideration.… It's not clear-cut one way or the other but we're going to have make choices between .

  • Fur Vs Faux Fur

  • Faux fur is quite merely fake fur. Faux, which is pronounced like the word “foe,” is French for "not real."Synthetic?" "Acrylic?" Faux fur is made from a mixture of coal, oil, water, and limestone. Coal is a non-renewable resource that must be mined (causing massive damage to the environment) and is the leading one of the causes of air pollution.
  • Oil is a non-renewable resource that must be drilled and refined and is also one of the leading causes of air pollution. Both are also leading producers of greenhouse gases. Limestone must be mined, further causing environmental damage. This is to get the raw materials themselves.
  • The faux fur must still be artificially processed, a time consuming process that produces chemical waste that is emptied into rivers, stored underground to leach into the soil, an further pollutes the air. Think, this is the process for all synthetics, not just faux fur. Why simply kill animals for food and clothing when you can destroy the whole planet?
  • Real fur is stronger, it is warmer, it is softer, it is heavier, it is gross
  • Nothing is as warm as real dead animal skin. Eskimos don't wear North Face Parkas. They use the real thing, because if they don't, they will freeze to death and die. If you eat meat, you are the same as those that wear fur or leather. Do you wear a leather belt? How about shoes?! It sure is hard to boycott leather shoes, especially if you have to wear a suit. Well, it is the same as fur.
  • On a motorcycle, nothing protects you like leather. Condor will melt to your skin and it's slippery so you will  slide three times the distance of leather's braking attributes against asphalt. Leather and fur are real and have valid uses. Faux is fake and for fashion.

Conclusion

  • Invest in real fur and leather  is the most ethical choice. In Canada, there are number of responsible fur harvesters. It's a more sustainable economic activity than many of the other manufacturing activities that produce fashion materials (such as petroleum based plastics and other polluting processes to create technical fabrics, polyesters and PVC). I always wonder why those concerned with ethics in fashion don't further dissect the materials whose manufacture contributes to climate change, pollution and habitat destruction - in effect causing more deaths (and eventual extinctions) of fur-bearing animals than the fur industry could hope to achieve.
